Sioux City Prairie Dogs

This public art display in the Summer of 2002
were sponsored by the Sioux Center Art Center

Why Prairie Dogs?

Nearly 200 year age (1804) Lewis and Clark and his “Core of Discoverer” trek from St Louis, up the Missouri River, across the Rocky Mountains, to the Pacific Ocean and back. Along the way, they discovered many new animals and plants including the prairie dog of the Midwest grasslands. They were so fascinated with this animal; they spend a day trying to capture a prairie dog. One was captured and was shipped to the White House for President Jefferson’s personal study.

Capturing a Prairie Day is story in itself. Also see the Prairie Dog PDF Map

The Sioux City Art Center's “Prairie Dog Quest” honors this animal discovery.
